Relationship between language and the development of theory of mind. Recognizing people have different beliefs, emotions, desires and intents which may be different than yours and these mental states influence others actions. People can believe things that are not real or true and act upon these false beliefs. Understand at about 4 years of age. More linguistically advanced children are more advanced on theory of mind tasks. Children with delayed language show delay in theory of mind tasks. 15% of variability in 5 year old theory of mind performance can be attributed to genes the rest is environment. Moms who use more mental state language with child, such as want, think, belief, know, have children who pass theory of mind tasks sooner. Children whose parents who have higher educated parents and siblings pass theory of mind earlier. There is a link between tom and language .
