In most adults language is mainly controlled by the left hemisphere. Ling 3p91 lecture 2: biological bases of language development. Says language is intrinsic to humans; language is universal and therefore part of our biological makeup. All human societies have human language in one form or another. There is lots of variability, we still all learn language. Some kids developed their own sign language when they couldn"t talk. 2 hypothesis: the hemispheres maturation in most individuals. Invariance: left hemisphere is specialized in left hemisphere from birth. Lateralized means the left hemisphere plays a greater role in language control language initially; language shifts to the left hemisphere with. Equipotentiality: left hemisphere is not specialized for language at birth; both. Dichotic listening tasks: sounds are presented to each simultaneously and skills are affected with certain types of brain damage. Brain injury: data from infants before language acquisition begun.
