Discourse is used for communication (schiffrin 1994), which is to transmit messages from one part of a living system to another (sebeok 1991). Linguistics is part of semiotics, which is the study of signs. Discourse analysis involves how the sign system works in communication. The man concludes he is in danger of imminent attack and takes evasive action. The first words are all persons/interpretant, the second words are signs, and the third words are objects (the sign indicates the referent/object) 1. 1 the triadic relation between the sign, the object and the interpretant (de saussure) Interpretant (the human mind to interpret the sign) Icon: a sign where the signifier bears some natural likeness to the signified (association by similarity); intentional. The sign is in a way an image; resembles what it refers to; could be imagery. Resemblance could be relational; a pair of close friends vs a pair of not close friends.
