Question of interest: how can an understanding of dominant discourse explain a gap in academic achievement between children from higher vs lower socio-economic status: discourse communities, primary vs secondary discourse, academic discourse ( community) Stigma; non standard vs standard: exposure; resources that are available to them, generational. Discourse analysis is an approach to the analysis of language that looks at patterns of language across texts as well as the social and cultural contexts in which the text occur. Why may an understanding of patterns of language use be important to you as a person, a university student, a professional: ie. Academic, family, applied linguistics, education, tesl, etc different communities. Only thing that is going to change is additional readings.
