LING 3P97 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Cued Speech, Alarm Clock, Cochlear Implant
Document Summary
Cochlear implant replaces hair cells by directly stimulating the auditory nerve (bypass) Tip hanging over ear: speech processor: computer processing piece. Sound hits microphone and gets sent to processor (which is set to patients needs) Manipulates sound + converts signal so it can be carried through the skull. Goes through coil (piece that sits at side of head) Jumps across skull to internal processor which sends signal sound to electrode array (which is inserted into the cochlear and follows same tonotopic organization (freqs at center = low) Don"t have as many electrodes as hair cells (has 24) Stimulating auditory nerve with electrical signal rather than auditory signal. But with no hearing aid, you still have residual hearing. All their hair cells will have been destroyed and they have no hearing. Very rigid; takes 8months to year to get approved. Have to be sure they will wear it without it. Having 2 implants improves speech in noise + in localization.
