LING 4P21 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Doctor Shopping
Document Summary
Guest lecture: listening to and supporting families of children with special needs through the grief process. Process is cyclical and may not always be complete. Cause of grief doesn"t fade away, child is a daily reminder of the loss that the parent has experienced. Phase 2: acknowledgement furious and unhappy (starting to accept that something is wrong) Anxiety, fear, paralysis, exhaustion, helplessness/powerless, anger, bargaining, depression, guilt, crisis of meaning. Phase 4: recovery (we don"t talk about acceptance anymore) Protective; allows for development of external and internal resources. Normal pattern is to move in and out (one day the family is on board, the next day they don"t agree with something anymore) Use shared concern for child as link between slp and family. Assist parent in developing positive relationship with medical practitioners. May manifest itself as abuse: spousal and child. Often leads to frenetic activity: mothers become the ultimate volunteer and fathers become workaholics.
