Amplify sound in specific frequency regions: make sounds louder, not clearer, audiologists can manipulate them to make frequencies louder as needed and maximize the benefits. Need to learn to make sense of sounds detected. Need to understand how hearing aids work in order to maximize residual hearing. Early 1900s start of electric instruments. 1947 technology had advanced to allow for miniaturization of batteries. Late 1950s behind the ear aids introduced. 1960s in the ear aids introduced. 1990s completely in the canal aids. Current trend open-ear fitting: amplifier makes the sound louder, receiver collects the sound. 2 main (cid:498)styles(cid:499: earmolds that couple aid to ear, electronic components in earpiece. Directionality: omnidirectional sound is coming from. Benefit: localization; you always have a good sense of where. Downfall: could be overwhelming; hard for concentration you have to figure out which sounds to focus on and block out the other ones: (uni)directional.
