LABR 2P86 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Body Politic, Supreme Court Of Canada, National Collective
Document Summary
In 1762 in his work entitled emile, rousseau (1762) discusses the notion of mothers as generative of nations, a concept which has been foundational to modern political discourses on nationalism. Rousseau argued that it was a women"s role to not only give birth to future generations, but also to educate them and thus produce a social society. In book v of emile, rousseau introduces the character sophy, who is to become emile"s companion and the mother and educator of his children. Rousseau stated that: the consequences of sex are wholly unlike for man and woman. The male is only a male now and again, the female is always a female, or at least all her youth; everything reminds her of her sex; the performance of her functions requires a special constitution. What loving care is required to preserve a united family!
