The commitee for industrial organizaion was formed within the afl in 1935, to organize unionizaion campaigns along industrial lines. It broke with the afl in 1938, becoming the cio. In 1955 the two merged to become the afl-cio. From 10-20% of the workforce, union density grew to about 30% in the usa by 1955. Social: increased acivism and solidarity put demands on employers and poliicians for speciic reforms. Insituional: industrial unions and the cio relected labour market realiies, inspired workers, and included efecive leaders. Majority of workers were unskilled and cio relected their wants.
