Going from a conception of what we think society is (we are all equal like the pieces of a checker board) to chess where they realize that they aren"t equal and there is little to no mobility. Chess comes from an era where hierarchy is fixed and people are born into their cast and they stay in that class. The guys realize while learning the rules of chess they are pons. Their idea is that they may be pons now but if they work hard enough and be smart and survive they will move up in this social hierarchy. The separation of people into racial categories change over time. There are a number of choices that are made in a way that these things are depicted.
