Its not that humans don"t recognize working animals. It is when we move past the obvious people get uncomfortable. A small mouse needs to avoid predators (cats, humans, birds, etc. ) Challenges for mouse at brock vs. mouse at barn (different environment means different challenges. Different challenges between african or asian elephants. Wouldn"t be good workers without this work. Work they do to ensure that they as a species survives and the ecosystem. Feeding, protecting and teaching young survives (ecosocial reproduction) Animals don"t choose what house they live in but can choose to comfort and protect family. Ex/ great danes (one blind and one choose to be her seeing eye dog) Ex/ dogs protecting homeless people is a choice. Cant quantify this but it is important. Marx himself may not be helpful but theories that have come from marxist thought have. Simple elements of labour process: purposeful activity, object(s) of labour.
