LING 2P53 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Isolating Language, Close Vowel, Implosive Consonant
Document Summary
Minimal pairs are two words which are differentiated only by choosing between one of two segments. These two different sounds /d/ and /t/ are said to be contrastive (distinctive) because it forms the basis for distinguishing two words. The difference between /t/ and aspirated t, however, is not contrastive in english but rather there is a rule aspirated stops follow depending on phonological context (i. e voiceless stops become aspirated at the beginning of a stressed syllable) Predictable variants of a phoneme are called allophones and these two sounds are in complementary distribution because they can occur in the same context. A,c,d can stand for phonemes/allophones or classes of sounds (such as voiceless stops) Ex of aspiration rule in english is. An alveolar stop becomes a flap when followed by an unstressed syllabic and preceeded by a vowel or glide. Flapping does not occur when /t/ is followed by /n/ In this case we have a glottal stop.
