Rhythm is the interplay of flowing and stopping. Rhythm is the relationship between successive note durations. Occurs in nature: everyday, we will perform a rhythmic task (ie. walking) Beat is the regular sense of pulse that you can tap or clap along to. Tempo the speed at which the beat occurs. Meter is organization of beats into groups of strong and weak beats. Conducting patterns show the beats: duple; two beats 2/4, triple; 3 beats , quadruple; 4 beats 4/4, 5 beats used at times; 5/4. Stars and stripes is in duple meter. The star spangled banner is in triple meter (3/4 time) In simple meter, beats are subdivided evenly (ie. two subdivisions per beat) In compound meter, beats are subdivided into three subdivisions per beat. Each beat is subdivide: duple (two groups of three ie. 6/8, triple (three groups of three 9/8, quadruple (four groups of three ie. 12/8)
