Conjunct movement: melodic movement made up of simple scale steps only: ie. Disjunct movement: melodic movement made up of wider leaps: wagner. Most melodies a combination of the two, although conjunct movement predominates. Melodies usually split up into coherent units called phrases. Phrase equivalent to about a line of text, that which can be managed in one breath. Phrase ended by a point of rest, or cadence. Cadences like musical punctuation; varying degrees of closure. If text sung, musical phrases and text phrases usually coincide. Cadences will mark end of line of text.
