A project is: an endeavor to accomplish a specific objective, through a unique set of interrelated tasks, and the effective utilization of resources. Cancelled the project in october 2005: main reason: poor project management did not understand scope and complexity before starting. Project attributes: clear objective, series of interdependent tasks, various resources, specific time frame, unique, one-time endeavor, sponsor or customer, degree of uncertainty. Examples of projects: the olympics, building a bridge, a new building on campus, designing and implementing a computer system, hosting a holiday party, holding a high school reunion, performing a series of surgeries on an accident victim. Balancing project constraints: resources, risk, customer satisfaction, scope, quality, schedule, budget. Software development projects: successful: on time and on budget, challenged: over budget or too long or had fewer features than originally planned, failure (cancelled or never implemented) Project manager actions: prevent, anticipate, overcome, have good planning and communication, monitor and control progress, control changes, be responsible.
