PHIL 1F90 Lecture 1: PHIL 1F90 Lecture 1
Document Summary
Plato said it first but aristotle got all the credit. As you will discover it begins in confusion, and confusion is always frustrating. We need to start creating a lexicon: Philosophers wants to say things as precisely and concisely as they can. Concepts are like water - if concept is clear you can see down to he bottom. If unclear your thinking will be murky as well. Generally the philosophical tree has several major branches. Every philosopher has to address at least the first three. This is the question of human nature. You think you are more than your body, but your body is part of you. Science wants to tell us only material physical things exist. It wants to reduce us to our bodies and brains. Most of us tend to be common sense realists, i. e. , believe in reality of what the senses show us. If i can see and touch it i know it is real.
