Document Summary

If the goal is care of the soul and such care is a kind of knowledge, then the next step is to find an expert in this field. Socrates argues it is difficult to find such a person and that he cannot afford the sophists so he decides to investigate the group. He begins by arguing that we already know something about the inquiry since we are ale to ask relevant questions about it. Care of the soul as an aim towards excellence. If we are interested in the care of the soul, then we are aiming to be virtuous. But to be virtuous for the ancient greeks means to care for oneself with the aim of becoming excellent. To be excellent means to exceed in all skills and to apply these skills appropriately during the course of ones life.
