Document Summary

Chapter 3: the second noble truth: samudaya (the arising of dukkha) Origin of dukkha (samudaya translates to arising) It is craving/thirst (tanha) which produces re-existence (ponobhavika) and is bound with passionate greed (nandiragasahagata) There is thirst for sense pleasures (kama tanha), thirst for existence and becoming (bhava tanha) and thirst for non-existence (vibhava tanha) This thirst manifest itself in various ways and gives rise to all forms of suffering and the continuity of beings. It is not the first cause, because buddhism believes everything is related and interconnected. Even this thirst which causes suffering relies on something else for its arising (sensation) and sensation relies on contact (phassa) for its arising and so on. This we call the conditioned genesis (paticca- samuppada) Thirst is not the first or only cause but it is the most immediate cause of dukkha. Thirst not only includes desire for wealth and physical things, but also attachment to ideas, ideals, views, opinions, beliefs etc.
