PHIL 2P13 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Asanga, Breakfast Cereal, Unthinkable
Document Summary
Chapter 1 - the buddhist attitude of the mind. Buddha claimed to be no more than a human-being and have no inspiration from a higher power either. He attributes all his realizations, achievements and attainments to human intelligence and human power. A man and only man can become a buddha; every man has potential to become a buddha if he wills it. Man is the most supreme; man is his own master and no higher power has judgement over his destiny. Only man can help himself and you must not seek help from others. Each person should develop himself and work on his own liberation, as he has the power to liberate himself through intelligence and effort. The buddha may be referred to as a saviour only because he showed the path to nirvana (liberation), but we must follow it ourselves.
