“Pornography and Censorship and Respect for Women”
1. does pornography degrade human beings?
radical feminists exploit women and degrade women.
2. does it degrade women more than men?
3. could an innocuous nondegrading pornography exist?
innocuous means harmless. porn that has no harm
could there be any pornography that doesn’t degrade men and women
no ill effects.
pornography harmful and has ill effects.
pornography degrade human beings
pornograyh degrade women more than men
nondegrading P is at least theoretically possible
not possible for it to exist today(1978) or perhaps 2014
Ann Garry’s definition of P:
“pornography is explicit sexual materials which are intended to arouse the reader or the
doesn’t define materials that do harm to women and degrade women
Atwood: sexual assault and rape and brutal sex
Susan brown: “P is the undiluted essence of antifemale propaganda”
there can be a moral objection if it degrade people show the P does degrade people
some P suggests that women like to be raped
some P depicts such things
not true that it is all of the P in the world
not essential to P that it must degrade and must exploit human beings
doesn’t pertain or inseparable from it
some do show rape, brutality
saying no really means yes
as it is part of the nature/genre
contrary to the principle on which we respect people (no=no)
objecting to the no is a violation of a person’s right
actual content of the P is the evaluation of her
we must treat them as themselves and merely as means
treating persons as objects and not as persons (sexual objects and not as persons) only treating human beings as someone sexual desires
sex between loving persons, requires using the other person as a mean
how could P not treat people as sexual objects?
actually related to one another?
drops the double standard and there are two kinds of women
women on the pedestal and one that has fallen from the pedestal
the potential wife and the tramp.
the one and the same women (outside and at home in bed)
respect for women and respect for class as inferior compared to men
man on ground is far better than women on pedestal
treated as less and less as a person
men who are considered full fledged and deserves to be respected
“good” women are not really respected as full fledged as men
“bad” women are not respected and lost their womanhood
two assumptions from Ann Garry
1. sex is dirty
2. good women therefore do not have sex. And only have sex for a good cause and maybe
enjoy it. They must be first to do it so they do it and never do it in public.
they must be bad women who do it in
