KINE 1P90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Phrenic Nerve, External Intercostal Muscles, Bronchoconstriction
Document Summary
Changes in intra-alveolar pressure produce flow of air into and out of the lungs. When the pressure in the lungs (intra-alveolar) is less than the pressure in the atmosphere, air rushes into the lungs. When the pressure in the lungs is greater than the pressure of the atmosphere, air is forced out of the lungs. The pressure in the lungs change when the volume of the lungs change (caused by respiratory muscles) Atmospheric pressure- the pressure exerted by the weight of the air (at sea level= Intra-alveolar pressure- the pressure within the alveoli. Intrapleural pressure- the pressure within the pleural sac (at rest= 756mmhg) Exerted outside the lungs but in the thoracic cavity. Moving air into and out of the lungs from the atmosphere. Inspiration occurs when the pressure in the alveoli is less than the atmospheric pressure. Expiration occurs when the pressure in the alveoli is greater than the atmospheric pressure.
