KINE 1P90 Lecture 3: Cardiac Output
Document Summary
Co= heart rate (hr) x stroke volume (sv) The amount of blood pumped per minute. The cardiac output depends on how much blood is required from the body. The body has about 5-6 l of blood in the body. Blood that is not being used, is in the veins moving slowly back to the heart. There is a limit for stroke value but we can increase our heart rate. Deliver adequate amounts of oxygen to body tissue. Provide a pathway which will allow body tissues to eliminate waste. Provide a mechanism which will assist in controlling body temperature (thermoregulation) Therefore, the cardiovascular system is responsible for controlling steady states or homeostasis within the body. During exercise, the requirements of the muscle tissues during exercise can increase 15 to 25 times the resting levels. Two major adjustments of blood flow are necessary: increase in cardiac output, redistribution of blood flow from the inactive organs to the working muscles.
