Kine1P90 - Lecture 2
Organization of Human body
Physiology -
the study of how the body works/functions (mechanistic)
Teleological Approach -
Explains functions in terms of meeting a bodily need
•“Why do I shiver when I’m cold?”...“ To help warm up
Mechanistic Approach-
explains functions in terms of sequence of physical and chemical reactions
•“Why do I shiver when I’m cold?”...“Temperature-sensitive nerve cells detect a fall in temperature
...then signal to the brain...etc”
Chemical level (organization of the human body) -
atoms and molecules
Cellular level-
cells are the basic unit of structure and function in the body
Cells -
the smallest unit able to carry out life
Cell differentiation -
different cells have different specialized functions
Tissue level-
third level of organization of the human body
Tissues -
cells with similar structure and specialized function combine to form this
Muscle Tissue (1)-
specialized for contracting and generating force
Nervous Tissue(2)-
specialized for initiating and transmitting electrical impulses
Epithelial Tissue (3)-
specialized for exchanging materials between the cell and its environment
