Ovum transports to oviduct, must occur within 24 hours ater ovulaion. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in female reproducive tract. Sperm deposited in vagina travels through cervical canal, uterus and to upper third of oviduct. Triggers chemical change in ovum"s surrounding membrane that makes outer layer impermeable to entry of any more sperm. Head of fused sperm gradually pulled into ovum"s cytoplasm. Within hour, sperm and egg nuclei fuse. Implants in endometrial lining by enzymes released by trophoblasts. Organ of exchange between maternal and fetal blood. Acts as transient, complex endocrine organ that secretes essenial pregnancy hormones. Hcg maintains corpus luteum unil placenta takes over funcion in last 2 trimesters. Finger like projecions of chronic issue extend into pools of maternal blood. Physical changes within mother to meet demands of pregnancy. Dilaion of cervical canal to accommodate passage of fetus from uterus through vagina and to outside. Contracion of uterine myometrium that are suiciently strong to expel fetus.
