Bread and circuses- describes the practice by roman emperors (and magistrates) to keep roman crowds pacified by giving them bread, fruit and other incentives as they watched events at the colosseum as a means of social control. Flavium- four-tiered oval stadium; 620 x 513 ft. surrounded by 15 ft. wall; 160 ft. high; primary site for roman gladiatorial combats; 50,000 seating.
