PEKN 2P03 Lecture # 1  Introduction to educational gymnastics  Prof: Tammy Whitaker-campbell  [email protected]  Weekly readings on sakaai  No required textbook to buy  Midterm: on first 5 lectures  Participate in2 research studies before December 5 2013  Safety: - Consideration for others - Responsible for own actions - Protocol - Safety rolls - No shouting/screaming - No pushing/fighting - Appropriate attire - Bare feet (must) - Handing equipment: always put away - Clean mats then put away (NEATLY) - No spotting aloud!  History of gymnastics:  Chinese: Wushu (2,700B.C.) martial art wushu, where idea of gymnastics started from  Ancient Egypt: acrobats vaulted over bulls  Gymnastics: Greek word (running, swimming, wrestling, throwing, jumping...)  Gymnos: naked  King Minos and his subjects had already given their royal approval (liked idea of sport)  Greek connection: soldier requirement (getting ready for war)  Used skills to strengthen/do gymnastics  Horses=great asset  Gymnastics=viral compone
