Basic Terminology
Terminology: Types of Dance
• Social
• Folk/cultural
• Freestyle
• Line/step
• Modern/contemporary- connection of the mind and body through movements
• Ballet
• Tap
• Jazz – math the rhyme and technique to jazz music
Terminology: Technique
Dance technique requires:
• Foot placement
• Force points – every movement involves the lead of the center point of balance
• Body alignment – to move freely, strengthen our muscles (connected to safety)
• Arm/hand placement
• Basic rhythm – pattern of regular and irregular movements
• Syncopation – stepping on an unstressed beat
Five positions
• Classic foot positions – straight line, touching heels, heel to the hollow part of the foot
• Pas de deux – dance for two people, the step of two, a dance for two male and female
with specific traditional requirements.
• Elevation – rising of the centre of gravity alone or with assistance
• Contraction – movement technique developed by Martha Graham based on the strong
pulling back and curving of the torso
• Countering – perfect balance by controlling centre of gravity
• Continuity – continuous movement, smooth transitions and flow
• Attitude – notion of style and presence
Terminology: Rhythm
Rhythm
• The regular occurrence of accented beats that shape the character of music or dance
Basic Elements of Rhythm
Beat – A tempo; unit of a musical piece or pattern of movements ( in 4/4 measure, the beat is
one quarter note)
Accent – Emphasized or stressed beat, generally starting a new measure , dancers may
accentuate movement t to highlight it
Tempo – Rate of speed of the music
Duration – Length of a sound/movement
Pattern – Combination of short/long or soft/strong sounds or movements
