What is health?
**Health Canada-Why?
According to our mission and vision, Heath Canada’s goal is for Canada to be among
the countries with the healthiest people in the world
To achieve this goal Health Canada:
It relies on high quality scientific research for the basis of our work.
Conducts ongoing consultations with Canadians to determine how to best
meet their long-term health care needs.
Communicates information about disease prevention to protect Canadians
from avoidable risks.
Encourages Canadian to take an active role in their health, such as increasing
their level of physical activity and eating well
Do you accept health Canada’s vision as a member of this country?
What do you do to realize this vision od a healthy society ?
EX/ pneumonia- society decided to treat this illness w/ everything we have- we no
longer accept the healthcare system saying he has pneumonia so he died
-W(Y do we not accept this…we were fine with it  years ago…W(AT changed?

From 1900-2000; huge decline in illness caused by germs/infection
-From 1900-2000; huge increase in illness caused by lifestyle factors
(heart disease, cancer..etc)
Do you think Society should help us stay healthy?
Should society help people who are obese?
Should society promote healthy minds and healthy bodies?
Should society help heavy cigarette smoking pot heads?
By 2020 70% of death in the world will be caused by: (take lightly)
-Stroke, heart disease, diabetes and cancers
-All these deaths could be avoided w/ proper nutrition, exercise, and
preventative treatments by healthcare providers

Health for all
(ealth is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of
living Ottawa, Canada
You need to be healthy to carry on with life (Ottawa charter) w/out health
everything else is difficult
Pre-requisites for Healthy Society

-Food
-Income, Stable eco-system
-Sustainable Resources
-Social Justice & equity
**Healthy promotion focuses on achieving equity in health. Health
Promotion aims at reducing differences in current health status and
ensuring equal opportunities and resources
Social Conditions and Individual Choice
There are 2 levels of health
Societal Level
Societal condition influence our health
Provide us with Facilitators and barriers to health choices
Individual Level
Choice is bounded by our social condition
***Our individual and societal needs often clash
Health promotion is:

Evidence
