Relies on high-quality scientific research as the basis for our work. Conducts ongoing consultations with canadians to determine how to best meet their long-term health care needs. Need evidence from the research to know what the best. Communicates information about disease prevention to protect canadians from avoidable risks. Encourages canadians to take an active role in their health, such as increasing their level of physical activity and eating well. Health: a state of complete physical, mental and social well=being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. From 1900-2000: huge decline in illness caused by germs/infections. From 1900-2000: huge increase in illnesses caused by lifestyle factors (heart disease, cancer, etc) Why do we pay for nicotine patches for smokers when we don"t smoke. No one chooses" to get an infection.
