KINE 2P85 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Avoidance Coping, Junk Food, Information Seeking
Document Summary
Information seeking (ex. asking a friend for advice on how to do well in a class) Problem focused coping = trying to deal with reducing stress (by reducing demand) or trying to reduce the stressor (increase resources) Emotion focused coping = trying to cope with negative emotions you experience from a stressor; instead of focusing on the problem, helps manage feelings. Both types used together most frequently (not one or the other like styles) Factors that moderate use of coping strategies : type of problem. Work and school related problems; problem focused used more. Relationship problems; emotion focused used more: age. Children use problem focused coping strategies almost exclusively. They don"t have control of thoughts to use it effectively. As we age, we become much more likely to use emotion/avoidance based coping strategies: gender. Some research suggest women use emotion-focused, and men use problem-focused: controllability of stressor.
