Sporting equipment was being massed produced (cheaper for athletes, standardization. Communications also new (telegraph (tapping written codes across through wires) and newspaper) People can follow sports in other places and countries. Penny farthing (big bike big front wheel, small back wheel) = start. Montreal = cradle of organized sport (birth place of clubs) 1807: montreal curling club: 1st club in canada. Lots of competition with people using ice (curling, selling blocks of ice) Rocks = used as bombs, and other metal pieces at the start. Started with drinking/social activities every so often curled. 1843: montreal snowshoeing club: small group of elite wealthy men created it (2nd club) Like curling the activities provided a distinct sense of social membership. Had specific uniforms, drank, had dinners, songs, stories, celebrated manliness of members in club.
