Individuals vary in levels (intensity) of pre-competitive state anxiety: some athletes need high levels for peak performance, others low. Optimal levels of anxiety intensity occur in a zone specific to individual athlete: not dependent on sport or skill level. When athlete is in their izof (individual zone of optimal functioning), competitive state anxiety is at optimal level for best performance: outside of izof: impaired performance. Every athlete has different izof: differences in izof not dependent on sport but on athlete.
