Lecture #4 nationalism and borders in ir. Nationalism includes a broad spectrum of definitions and types. One of the most common is some form of patriotic feeling or patriotism. In some instances, this can be marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries. Basic nationalism (feelings of pride) tend to be benign (ie/ cheering for teams in olympics, celebrating national holiday, etc. ) As we have seen, it can easily grow into a feeling of superiority- us vs. them- and spiral out of control. In many instances, this can lead to a majority population displacing a minority one. It can push them across borders into another sovereign country. In other instances, it can lead to a minority population pushing for national self control and an open challenge of the sovereignty of an existing state. Most recently, the push for catalan independence in spain. Civic nationalism: involves a commitment to a state and its values.
