POLI 2P80 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Snowball Sampling, Structured Interview
Document Summary
Involves a face to face discussion with one (or more) subjects, designed to gather information. May gather similar information to surveys, but has the ability to go more in depth and gather more information. The trade off is that you can interview fewer people than you can survey. The subject and researcher are both active participants in the process. Conversational i(cid:374) (cid:374)ature, although the researcher (cid:858)co(cid:374)trols(cid:859) the situatio(cid:374) by asking questions. The researcher should attempt to connect with the subject share jokes etc. Follow up is easy elaboration is encouraged. Few numbers than surveys, so each subject must be selected for a reason and serve a specific purpose. Generally non probability sampling nothing is random. Purposive sampling desire to reach specific population. Snowball sampling build upon leads and connections in. Until researcher has confidence that enough info provided. A dialogue/ oral interview, but one administered more like a survey. Researcher has a specific rigid list of questions to follow.
