Liberals won 60% of seats with 41% of cote. Pcs got 16% of vote (2 million votes) but only 2 seats!! Under pr they would have had over 40. Said to better represent women and minorities. Encourages higher turnout every vote counts. Don"t have to worry about convincing a region but rather each individual. Can have a minority party (attracts votes) Parties have lists of possible mps and will use a sort of zipper effect (half men and half women for example) to get votes. Was strongly correlated with high socio-economic status (ses) Paradox: education and income are up, but voter turnout declining. Important: lijphart (1997) leads to unequal representation and influence. In an average 4 year period, canadians will get to vote 3 or 4 times. They will get to pick about a dozen candidates, mainly for local office. Us voter have as many as a dozen elections to vote in.
