PSYC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Critical Thinking, Conceptual System, Spiritualism
Document Summary
Metacognition - a student"s awareness of their level of understanding of a given topic. Clinging to certainty we tend to hang on to the facts we are confident of; as humans we are wired to stick to what we know is safe. We tend to see the world as assumptions of our own individual and conceptual systems, rather than see it how it really is. Psychology must be accepted as a challenge to be straightforward about one"s own beliefs, whether they be scientific, religious or philosophical. For example, when meeting someone for the first time, we tend to carry preconceived notions about them, but then they surprise us. Epistemology can be classified into 3 branches: empiricism: science, based on observation and common sense, evidence-based c. requires critical thinking, rationalism: philosophy, spiritualism: religion. In other words, ontology is revealed through science and evidence based observations.
