Lecture # 5 october 17, 2016 reality (my reality) vs reality (the external world) E(cid:373)(cid:373)a(cid:374)uel ka(cid:374)t"s disti(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374) (cid:271)et(cid:449)ee(cid:374) the (cid:374)ou(cid:373)e(cid:374)o(cid:374) a(cid:374)d phenomenon: thing in itself and thing as it appears. Wilhelm wundt: physics is the science of reality, psychology is the science of reality, psychophysics. Proximal stimulus: pattern or energy falling on sense receptor. Sometimes the distal stimulus is there but we do not experience a percept: sensory adaptation e. g. stabilized retinal images. Sometimes the percept is there but the distal stimulus is not (e. g. necker cube) Joh(cid:374) lo(cid:272)ke"s (cid:894)(cid:1005)69(cid:1004)(cid:895) disti(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374) (cid:271)et(cid:449)ee(cid:374) p(cid:396)i(cid:373)a(cid:396)(cid:455) a(cid:374)d se(cid:272)o(cid:374)da(cid:396)(cid:455) (cid:395)ualities. Distal stimulus gives a proximal stimulus thus mixing up i. e. red a and blue x, they will report a blue a and red x. Sensation: the process by which physical energy patterns falling upon the sense receptor (the proximal stimulus) are transduced to nervous impulses: takes place at the back of the brain.
