PSYC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Human Genome Project, Triune Brain, Ego Depletion
Document Summary
Gradual change as opposed to radical redesign. Satisficing ensuring survival vs. enabling optimal function. Reptilian (hind brain) - makes you inactive or active. Paleomammalian (limbic system) - this is the emotional processing part. Neomammalian (cerebral cortex) this is where we are thinking and learning. Left and right hemispheres, corpus callosum, esp. frontal lobes. Because the old structures are not thrown out they have to be connected or else it wouldn"t work. Therefore we have at least two different operant systems in us. Hot/cool theory simple vs. complex reflexive vs. reflective fast vs. slow. Hot system: go , experiential cognition, system 1 cognition. Cool system: know , reflective cognition, system 2 cognition. Accentuated by stress vs attenuated by stress stimulus control (automatic) vs. self-control (controlled) Hot/cool theory recognize the power of the stimulus control. The triune brain connections among the three brains .
