PSYC 1F90 Lecture 8: Health Psychology
Document Summary
This model builds the basis for and informs most hospitals. Government funding is driven by this model. Inherited a world that is built on a flawed model. We struggle with how to remove these inherited ways that we have accumulated. Based on the following stages of diagnosis: Physical disease symptoms (and response) treatment. Symptoms refers to our experience of our illness (such as pain) and response refers to the things we can see (such as tone of vice, behaviours, etc. ) This model tends to view physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals as technicians. Psychologists have a very narrow role in this model. Deals with the non-body side of things. Arrows are not linear in one direction. Example: response can affect symptoms, disease, physical factors, etc. Nature (body) and nurture (mind) are seen as a real difference; however, at the moment of an illness there is no true different. Causes and treatment are not tightly related.
