PSYC 2P12 January 15 Lifespan Development Begins... Stages of Prenatal Development Germinal Stage- Zygote - Conception to two weeks Embryonic Stage- rapid - 3-8 weeks - major organs being to form; Basics of brain development  Neurons are born (Neurogenesis), in a neural tube (Day 8-24) o Bulges in neural tube become areas of the brain  Neurons migrate, then differentiate (glial cell) o Cells go to future layer 1 of cortex, the next group passes through layer 1 and becomes layer 2, and so on o Each cell layer has a specific function  Synapse forms, so cells can communicate with each other o Sends out dendrites o Axon releases neurotransmitter o Neurotransmitters stimulates dendrites and are absorbed  Myelination (myelin- fatty tissue) o Lipid/protein substance o Speeds conduction velocity, faster information transfers o Begins prenatally and continues  Synaptic pruning o Each cell forms many dendrites connecting to many other cells o Throughout
