PSYC 2P20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Achromatopsia, Vise, Prosopagnosia
Document Summary
The process by which we make sense of our surroundings by interpreting the information from our sense organs. We are only aware of a very small proportion of the information that is processed perceptually. We are constantly taking in new sensory information. We are only aware of certain things. Visual processing: visual signals begin processing in the occipital lobe. Processing that takes information from the stimulus. Each stimulus is broken down into elementary features. E. g. , colour, line, orientation, curves, depth, movement, location, spatial frequency. Features are processed independently in specialized areas. We build" what we see; build the stimulus. Combine elements to make sense of what we are seeing. Many different attributes (features) of a visual stimulus are processed in parallel. Parallel: automatic, multiple things at the same time. We bring expectancies, experience, context, stored knowledge, rules of the world. E. g. , recognition of shovel is faster in garden picture than kitchen picture, but reverse for toaster.
