A group is when there are more than 3 people interacting. Homogeneity of groups: similar in age, sex, beliefs, and opinions. Fulfillment of basic human needs: relatedness need (self-determination theory), need to belong, self-esteem. Motivation to be involved in social change. Mere presence of others increase physiological arousal. Make it easier to complete simple tasks. Makes it more difficult to complete difficult/complex tasks. Built a contraception to see how cockroaches behaviour change in the presence of other cockroaches. The box had a bright light and they timed how long it took for them to escape. Results showed that cockroaches performed better when they were in the company of other cockroaches. Other people cause us to become alert and vigilant. Other people make us apprehensive about being evaluated (evaluation apprehension). Other people distract us from the task. Increased in relaxation impairs performance on simple tasks. Increased in relaxation improves performance on complex tasks.
