Tongue moves the food substances towards the back of the mouth for digestion. Some solution falls into the troughs of each papilla. Distribution of taste buds somewhat preferentially represented but generally throughout. Genetic factors and hormones can account for some differences in taste sensitivity. Variations in taste sensitivity are related to the number of fungiform papillae near the tip of the tongue. Supertasters have higher sensitivity to all tastes and mouth sensations in general. Accomplished by taste receptors which last about 10-14 days. Papillae hold up to 10 taste buds, each of which certain up to 150 receptor cells. Also have mechanical and non-gustatory for texture and temperature detection. Largely influenced by olfaction (ex. when you have stuffy nose =tend to be discriminate by texture)
