PSYC 3F20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Inter-Rater Reliability, Empirical Research, Dsm-5
Document Summary
Dsm has a vast majority of mental disorders. We discuss some of the disorders are good and some are not so good. Few mental disorders in dsm 5 have zones of rarity boundaries. Genes can increase more then just one disorder even thought the disorders are not very similar to one another. Additional criticisms of categorical classification in dsm-5: Disorder is present of absent, no in between option. Heterogeneity due to polythetic criteria sets (can have a subset of the full set of criteria), with this you can get a diverse amount of people in the same category. For example, 5 out of 9 symptoms can be diagnosed with depression. Problem behavior viewed as extreme end of a continuum of behavior. More typical features of dimensional measures: empirical method of establishing dimensions, norm referenced tests to compare respondents ratings to normal population, clinical cutoffs established through statistical criteria.
