Document Summary
Propinquity (mere exposure; proximity); we have a bias that generally what is familiar is preferred. Festinger"s (1950) studies, looked at dorm set up and who is. Closest companion , 41% said person 1 door away while only. Moreland and beech (1992) had confederates come into classroom occasionally throughout year (0,5,10,15) and had participants rate attraction, person who showed up most to class was rated as most attractive (on basis of familiarity alone) Similarity; extent to which people are similar in personality and attitudes. Evidence seems to suggest that most of the similarity between couples is a perceived similarity, and that the longer they are together the effects are less pronounced. Montoya (2008) most of the studies showing connection of attraction and similarity is a phenomenon of the lab; association decreases with familiarity. Could still be a basis of initial attraction. In actual relationships ; things like attractiveness, commitment and reciprocation of liking seem more important.
