Takes place in psychology department of the prison; or solitary confinement (everything can be heard) Given id badge and alarm button; multiple levels of doors. Canadian prisons smaller than 500 prisoners or less. Proximity of guards *not in the same room. First priority is other guards and inmates, researcher is not first priority. Ethical approval contingent on balance between cost to participants, value of study. 75% of people would listen to the authority figure (thinking that they were shocking someone to the point of unconsciousness or beyond) Variables need to be both reliable and valid to draw accurate conclusions validity - measuring what its suppose to measure. Alternate forms reliable ( two tests measuring the same thing) Internal consistency: inter-item correlation *answering consistently within the measure. Convergent validity: another measure of the same construct would have to be correlated.
