PSYC 3P75 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Hans Selye, Hypertension, Blood Sugar
Document Summary
The condition in which person-environment transactions lead to a perceived discrepancy between the physical or psychological demands of a situation and the resources of the individual"s biological, psychological or social systems. A person"s biopsychosocial resources can be challenged. These include: bio: sleep, immune system, energy balance, psycho: our mental state, thoughts, emotions, social: our interpersonal relationships. Immune sensitive stress can be measured through saliva via antibodies. The stressor demands resources from the individual. These are the resources required to satisfy the stressor. The person is the one that assesses discrepancies. Stress influences you and you influence the stressor. A discrepancy may exist between: the resources demanded by the stressor and/or the individual"s resources available to allocate to the stressor. This discrepancy may be real or perceived. Transactions are the constant assessment of our resources and the demands made upon them. When there is a discrepancy, we feel stress. During transactions we are constantly assessing potential discrepancies.
