Serial killers in the media: media sensationalizes serial killers. Movies, books, songs: media caters to public demand! What is serial murder: killing of a minimum of 3 people, 3 or more separate events, 3 or more separate locations, cooling off period in between. 1980"s: ~ 35 serial killers at large. Current: 200 500 serial killers at large. Generally there are about 14 thousand reported murder cases in the us. Much higher population in us, can account for different percentage of serial killers in different countries. Typical characteristics: white male (increasingly become diverse but predominately white, 20"s to 40"s (if escape detection may be older, if they spent time in prison they may be older as well, loners, intelligent & charming. 50/50; findings show that 50% have life long criminal behaviour and history: serial homicide is associated with rape and burglary.
