SOCI 1F90 Lecture Notes - Abusive Power And Control, Class Conflict, Edward Said
Document Summary
Modern social theorists feed on classic theories. Antonio gramsci: forms of political and social control: domination & hegemony. Accepted analysis of class struggle, but disagreed with how capitalists maintain power was considered a communist. Marx: capitalists use force or coercion to dominate working class (police, military) Gramsci: they also manipulate ideas as a subtle form of control. Domination: (coercive control) physical and violent coercion to maintain social boundaries and enforce social rules is needed by the state when hegemony isn"t working. Hegemony: (consensual control) domination through ideological control and consent individuals voluntarily take on the ideals of the ruling class. Power is a resource you do or don"t have; wielded to oppress. Power is a network dispersed throughout society. Exercised in daily life by everyone; embodied. Power is exercised as we enact discourses: How we thank, act or speak about particular institutions. Sets of rules made by social institutions.
