Soci 2p90 october 5, 2016 feminist theories continued . Every human being participates in theorizing, the activity of creating theory. Feminist theories = a roadmap for understanding feminism. Theory helps us understand different political positions & to think about the causes & solutions for women"s oppression. Feminist theories want to: describe women"s oppression or subordination. This was a time of: geographic expansion. Industrial development: growth of social reform movements. A general intellectual ferment (individual freedom, the "rights of man" and universal education) Individual"s capacity for rational thought was very important. The state seen as neutral: all people equal under the law: choice: allowed to rise in society as far as talents allow. Women, however, were the fairer sex that were not rational & needed protection from the larger world. First major works of feminist theory in 1792. Mary said: reason is the same in all persons whether male or female ! Males & females should have the same educational opportunities.
